Initial Start Date - ( / 2016) -This has been a major push for me over the last couple of months as I developed a spreadsheet for the European languages based on the loom of language book. There are some great grammar sites out there and putting the relevant url's into the spreadsheet cells gives a very rapid entrance to both horizontal entries on different handling of the same aspect as dwell as vertical handling of several aspects in one language...just working out a structure has helped me absorb the basics of language and a human project over the centuries, as well as its embedded historical remnants as peoples move around he globe.
The first helpful structure insight was a person who wrote that there are two kinds of words...content words (nouns verbs adjectives and adverbs) and functional words (everything else)...with sub categories to be sure, but that gave me the first tow major spreadsheets for the Euro language sets. When that was done the third sheet fell into place when I realized that each language had a set of instructions as to how to assemble sentences which were called syntax. I immediately saw that it was like setting up a baby's crib...you get panels (content words) and nuts and bolts (function words) and a set of instructions as to how to put it all together. After that, it was easy to see who to lay it out and get a road map.
One thing that stood out was the difference between the resources available for minor languages like low German of Mennonite groups here in Manitoba compared to huge sites by well funded major languages. However, it is still amazing what is out there for any language, and what can be cobbled together.
Being a history major, it is understandable why I respond to the embedded human "hand" in the mixing of languages like Latin in Europe where it met with smaller languages, and was also affected by what parts of Italy the soldiers came from in each part of Europe, meaning that differences arose there as well as languages melded together over the years.
Having columns for old, middle early modern and modern English has been helpful for watching shifts in our own language and when hey took place. I did it for the Greek columns (ancient, Koine and modern) as well as I studied Koine in University. The same could be done for any of the other languages but I don't want to clutter things up too much.
What would be helpful for people coming into English from any of the European languages would be to take the spreadsheet categories and chase down sites in their own home language which explain each of he aspects of the Euro languages asd well as English but done in their home language for rapid comprehension of he basic concepts.A road map is a road map no mater what language it is constructed in. Google translate for sites goes part way down the road in this matter.
Slowly a comprehension of how languages function is emerging, almost by intuition rather than by memorization.

( 23 Oct.2017)Got a copy of Charles Duff's The Basis and essentials of Spanish (spin off from Ogden). The Grammar is very well put and very brief. There is an expanded basic vocabulary as well.
If a good "Mall Map - you are here" of the Spanish language is needed this book would likely work. Good overview but simply put. A pretty typical intro text using the
Grammar-Translation method of instruction (or self instruction0. My guess is that it would be a good check reference type book to go with the "synergy Spanish" method.****************
