I see there is a controversy about how soon to speak but I think it is a central issue for me as it was where French bogged down before. The tools for this like shadowing might well deal with this

(17 /Nov/ 2016) - After finishing Chapter 2 in Bodmer's Loom of Language on the development of the Alphabet which included an overview of he international phonetic alphabet, I think his advice to spend a few hours learning this system (used in all dictionaries, for all languages) would be worth while...next I think.

I read Lewis blog post on speaking as central to learning not just an outcome of it, makes sense at this point, as a focus for moving forward. Combined with Bodmer's comments that written word always lags behind spoken word in changes of pronunciation, then reading would not be as useful off the top.

I pulled up a variety of resources on IPA and posted them on my resource page for working on.. Many excellent resources for learning IPA. I also printed out the comparative chart to see what sounds were in all three of my languages of interest. Fascinating!

I did a lot of work on the IPA system in Costa Rica and realized that having a number of explanations helped, as they  each picked up on different aspects of he system. Great tools for pronunciation abound. One your guy did a piece on his one month to learn Spanish effort, and alerted me to a service which uses music and rhythm combined with breaking down lyrics by syllable...with the option to send in the recorded results and they will tell you what errors you are making with what sounds and how to correct them. Music and rhythm apparently get around the problem of speed of speech in native speakers as it trucks right along...

I found dumping lyrics into a trans-poser often helped me to hear subtle sounds which I was not alerted to by just working from the alphabet. It is slow for me, but good for tricky sound combinations.I am also hearing my own English much more accurately than before as well...like where the same sound crops up in different words, which I had not really thought about in general usage.
