Tools For Spanish Language Learning - Reading
Process Option 01 - "Just Start Reading And Don't Stop "
Process Option 02 - Obtain Desired Target Documents -
eg. Driving
- BodmerHas some fascinating observations
about which of the four of the basic skills to take on first.
He notes that reading from journalists and novelists (to say
nothing of science and technology writers) takes 15,000 words
of vocabulary rather than 1700 for normal self expression in
speech and writing. (Bodmer pp.11-16)
Process Option 03 - Use Interlinear Books to Read Your Way To
Reading Fluency
Process Option 04 - Four Mini-Task Rotation For Each Reading
- Use four mini-tasks, one each section you read or article
from a magazine, and rotate them to keep them fresh. If you
have a small group of four working together, then each take a
mini-task and rotate them among group members for each
reading. Commonly used mini-tasks are:
- Connections (do a paragraph about what
connections / relevance the reading or section has to daily
life for you).
- Vocabulary (look up and write out any words
you are unfamiliar with).
- Research (Research some aspect of the section
or reading, and jot down some further info available from
other sources).
- Illustration (Illustrate artistically some
aspect of the reading, or perhaps the main theme or central
idea of the theme),
Process Option 05 - Use or adapt the "SQ-3R" approach to
attacking new material
- "SQ-3R" stands for "Survey, Question Read Recite Review". It
was a popular way to increase reading speed, using readings
geared to a carefully sequenced set of graded readings and
exercises.
The main idea was to: 1- Survey - the
material...that, is take a brief skim over it to see what is
involved.
2 - Question - about the material - that is,
try to generate some question relating to the material at
hand, so that you are reading for specific information, for
example.
3 - Read - the material - that is the part we
normally associate with "reading" something.
4 - Recite - the main points you learned. Some
like to write these down and message them into a suitable
format.
5 - Review - here is where the review systems click
in, at particular intervals in order to solidify the main
points in your long term memory.
The process is useful as a skill for reading material in
preparation for subsequent exams. There are variations on this
approach to increasing speed of reading.
