Experiment In French Language Based Learning Of Guitar - Listening
Process Option 01 - "Shadowing"
Prof. Alexander Arguelles developed a system of language learning, the heart of which is "Shadowing" or simultanious repeating of printed and orally read material off a tape recording. He then uses direct translation of the material in a number of progressively exacting ways to slide into a healthy comprehension of the flow of the language. He Explains this on Youtube.
I decided to use the French Jerusalem Bible ( One of the most beautiful translations of Scripture) and its derivitive English version to test this method out for possible use in my approach. I will be using the annotated list of passages I made for a client earlier.- Later note - Easier said than done. There are French audio versions online but I have yet to find the Jerusalem Bible...or the later New Jerusalem Bible in audio online. However, at my livel any French is better than my French...grin. Besides, the point is that there is a high motivation factor in this for me as I have a solid Biblical background, and an appreciation for the content. For my purposes, any dual translation will work as long as it has French in audio.
- Further note: On trying it out as a test, I then went bakc to the Youtube item on Shadowing and I was amazed at how much more detail of his process he gave. I'm not sure I will do all his stages, but I think I will use this process in my learning, and use a variety of dual language materials. It reminds me of cutting the grass when it is too long...go over it several times, each time lowering the lawnmower...
Process Option 02 - Listen a lot.
- Let it wash over you in great volumes. "Brain soak" in a context that is relevant. (Lonsdale)
Process Option 03 - Dual-Language Structured Listening
- Thimm and later Ernst (with Bashour) developed a system of language learning with dual pages (French and English) on opposing pages in French Self Taught
- Though much older than other systems, its genius is that is focuses on conversational essentials rather than lesser used words or essoteric terms restricted to specialties in life
- Arguelles uses this book as one of his models for his shadokwing system, because the identical pages in target and teaching languages are already assembled
- This system builds up from simple to more complex usage and a great deal of thought has gone into this flow
- It is downloadable on the net, complete with audio, and the older version is in public domain.
- International Phoenetic seplling was added by Bashour, as curent media was not available at the time it was created.
- Arguelles really pushes this process to its fullest level, as explained in his Youtube explanations Shadowing
