“Division Of Labor In Academe” [reflection on Todd’s intro page 21ff to Adam Smith's Book An Inquiry Into The Nature And Causes Of The Wealth Of Nations Indianapolis : Liberty Classics, 1981 (Vol.I and II) Book 1]

In footnotes to Todd’s intro’s where I saw it first –
The T-R and the Giver’s roles in quenching thirst,
Of guys like me to comprehend the way ahead,
Amidst the stacks of info-books that we have read.

My giver-side, like Smith’s, likes to connect the pipes;
The T-R folks just pile them up so they look nice;
That’s one, two, three; point A, B, C, like any text;
But sequenced-logic has low use – it’s second-best.

It’s when those pipes, like Lego Blocks, or Tinker Toys
Are used to build some edifice for girls and boys,
Who wish to utilize them in the practical,
That TR-GF’s work shifts to the tactical.

And that’s the part that really turns my crank –
I know my place in larger structure, that my rank
In hierarchic halls of academe
Are far too practical to garner much esteem.

But I’m assured to see that Smith a Giver is,
Who loves the T-R’s “A to Zee” assembly biz,
So he can build his theory’s structure there,
Assembling what the T-R’s found, with builder’s care.

Smith’s not original, and that surprises me;
His contribution to the whole’s now clear to see –
He showed how all the parts connected up;
Though early-stage, of course, and therefore somewhat rough.

As business grasped his Giver-model, plugged it in,
To make the wheels of industry much faster spin,
We theologians can now ask, “How would this flip
To Kingdom-living? Your concern with worst of it?”

Lord, thanks for helping me to see how all of this
Relates to Your agenda, as to Heaven’s Kiss,
In ways that work far better than my first attempts;
For now the Eden-focus is on how things went.

Thanks Lord for this.
