“The Easement” [Reflections on Ralph D. Sawyer's Translation of One Hundred Unorthodox Strategies - Battle Tactics of Chinese Warfare - #02]

This guy came in to gather up
A signature – not cash enough;
His plan? Pretend it’s still ahead;
But violation was, instead –

A thing of past – I watched them there;
He was a lawyer – yet he dared
To sit and lie right to my face;
“So”, queried I, “How ’bout this case –

I do not sign, and you proceed?
That is, tell me what is the need
For your sweet paper – tell me that;
Convince me, then I’ll let you scat.

I caught him in a boldfaced lie;
I didn’t care, but wondered why
He’d do that (think he knew I knew),
He backed right down – as “Ed” would do.

Lord, that’s the part I’m hearing here –
Attack their plans, ensure they’re clear
To you, sometimes that’s all it takes –
Split mud from boots to raise the stakes.

Or even what You had to me do
With UCC – I’d not a clue,
But as You showed me what to say,
You split them from their evil way.

Thanks, Lord, for this part of the book,
And how in history it took
A Chinese statesman to perceive
A twisted view of holy need –

But now as I untwist it here,
Your way of acting comes quite clear;
So thanks for this delightful piece
That Kingdom-life in You increase.

Thanks Lord for this.
