“Comics” [100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design Stephen Heller and Veronique Vienne - #63]

When we were kids, I now recall,
My mom, and others (we were small),
Concerned became as comic books
Swept through our town with “graphic” look.

“So violent!”; “Such sexist tone”;
“No way they’ll come into my home!”
Just like “New channels” (later date),
And “Digital-type “games” we make.

It’s not that “Comic” has to be
So “on the edge”; in both we see
A match-up, more like punk-rock tunes –
Rebelliousness gives teeners room –

To stretch in our society,
Where myths and lies are soon to be
The “softeners” of speech and thought
For adult life – that’s why they’re taught.

But in this passage detail reigns –
They speak of genders not the same –
With chunky type for masculine,
And curlicues for feminine.

“Hand-written” is the effect they show,
Though type-set each, so readers know
Symbolic is the sub-text here –
Which “graphic novels” make quite clear.

The 60’s rebels used this form
To say “Dig down beneath all norms,
If you would truth convey or read,
To satisfy your restless greed.”

Lord, this gives me some awesome tools
Like for some passages where fools
Could catch the “tone” of what is said –
Boosts thought itself, beyond what’s read.

Hmmm – thanks Lord for this.
