In Canada, Municipalities are the creation of each provincial government, and therefore the form they take and the tasks they are assigned are strictly at the discretion of each provincial government.
At present there are 199 municipalities and Manitoba. These municipalities are divided into eight regions. There is also an increasing tendency for municipalities to cluster together into sub-groups for a variety of purposes. One of the main reasons for this is that Provincial money goes farther when it does not have to be split 199 ways.
One of the best Internet resources for information on each municipality is a series of community profiles which use a common format for all municipalities. This format was specifically designed to provide information required by businesses searching for a most appropriate location. The format was designed after analyzing several hundred web sites and consulting with businesses as to their information needs.
Municipal funding comes mainly from property tax assessments. The province also provides grants for economic development on a per capita basis, out of revenues generated from VLT machines within the province.
