Longitudinal Studies

As brief definitions like the one from the educational area point out, longitudinal studies are conducted with identical of similar groups over a long period of time in order to discover the effects of time on some factor of interest. The number of times the study is repeated is immaterial.

As James Fuller points out, people conducting longitudinal studies for developmental purposes, regardless of what is the focus of that development, need stability in as many factors as possible in order to facilitate their work. The State of Florida developed a developmental research school in 1934 in order to provide just such a research base in the area of education. Most researchers do not have the luxury of such an establishment.
