Problem Solving Research

The term "Problem solving research" covers two types of research
  1. research into how people go about problem solving, which has a notable history, as Joachim Funke and Peter Frensch outline in their overview.
  2. research which is conducted to solve a particular problem, as is seen in [PDF]outlines of marketing research methods.

Valerie Hughes in her presentation of problem-solving research in Education, has a point when she says that all [read: Most?]research is problem-solving research, but there is a special case in some disciplines like Education. In marketing research, the term is used to distinguish the problem identification stage (or type of research) from problem resolution. This difference is reflected in the "stage one" and "stage two through six" sections in the flow schema referred to elsewhere on this site

For some people, this term refers to a type of research which is synonymous with action research
