Having a bit of an idea what is going to happen, how people are likely to react, and what obstacles one might encounter on a particular path in life, are some of the helpful pieces of information many people like to have. Many police forces use "profiling" systems to categorize people in order to anticipate possible adverse reactions to events like interventions. Research designed to develop such systems is known as "Predictive" research.Predictive research is a very popular type of research, and is conducted in a wide number of disciplines. The use of such research is even more widespread, as one single predictive factor can find use in many other disciplines and areas of the community:
- Predictive research used in accounting practice is used to anticipate market reactions to different types of financial disclosure of corporate information.
- Education uses it to develop indicators of student achievement and select the best possible teaching strategies to bring such achievement to fruition.
- Predictive research is widely used in Marketing research in order to anticipate market responses to various marketing mixes of the "4P's" - product, place, price, and promotion, to particular target markets in particular situations.
- Medical research uses predictive research in order to understand the factors and conditions related to the spread of disease in order to control epidemics.
- Human Resources Departments use Psychological and personality tests in order to screen job candidates by trying to predict which personality types are likely to fit (or not) into an organization.
- Criminologists use predictive research in order to discover factors which are predictive of aberant sexual activity in the community or its possible recurrence in specific individuals.
