Exploratory Research

People who categorize research generally seem to agree about exploratory research: it is done to do preliminary investigation of a new field prior to more detailed research. It is also used to open up a new area of investigation for the researcher him/herself, even if for a university paper. A kids' research site refers to it as one of their three steps in research.

There is an excellent PowerPoint from the Business sector on the steps of conducting such research, as well as another good brief outline on the Internet. A further article by Rudy Monaco cautions that its interpretation is sometimes tricky and outlines why.

Some Universities fund it within their organization, in order to keep ideas flowing for new initiatives in research. Robert Stebbins, in an article refers to it as a way to keep a discipline from stagnating. Another article looks at how to set up a lab in such a way as to

  • foster exploratory research in the says of funding shifts to applied and away from pure research.
