Associative Research

The term "associative research" is used to refer to what might be regarded as a "snowball" approach to gathering information and forming a framework for it. In one report on computers and the Humanities one author (the last on the list) speaks of having a hunch, going in, picking up some pieces of detail and spinning out from there in associative conglomerations of material.

Sara McNeil writes that in her research , the tool of hypermedia is an excellent tool for such associative research projects. Neta Crawford in [PDF]her article on political relations reflects on his research and notes that human reasoning has all three elements of "top-down", "rule following" and "association" approaches, which, if true, would give warrant for this sort of research.
