What We Really Believe

A few years ago Billy Graham used a story[] which for me summed up the issue of sorting out what we really believe at any given time.

Apparently, at the turn of the last century, a tightrope walker entertained a crowd by Niagara Falls by walking back and forth across the edge of the Falls. The King of England was among the crowd, and I gather it was a very large event.

One of his stunts was to take a wheelbarrow full of rocks back and for the across the fall. After doing it, he descended to the front of the crowd and called out, "Who believes i can do that with a person in the wheelbarrow?"

At once a big boastful man, who wanted to see him do such a daring stunt called out, "I do!"

"Then, hop in the wheelbarrow" the tight rope artist responded.

The big boastful man suddenly backed off and excused himself, not wanting to do such a risky thing himself.

Billy went on to note that we "really believe" the things we are able to get in the wheelbarrow about, and all the other things we are "still just thinking about."
