Gabe's notes of introduction give an initial definition and outline the needs which gave rise to the process. The Qualitative and Quantitative interface and multiple sources of the process are outlined, concluding with the observation that the process is actually a constellation of processes utilizing a variety of techniques which are appropriate to each situation. PRA as the later of the two methods and tends to be more field oriented than the RRA of University origin.He addressed several key principles:
- Triangulation
- Optimal Ignorance and appropriate Imprecision ("Satisficing" in other contexts)
- Participation and reversal of learning
- Flexibility
- off-setting biases
- Rapidity
- Interdisciplinarity and team approach
He describes the four classes of the process:
Four classes of techniques are dealt with (Written, Verbal, interactive, and visual - including assorted visual aids creation like the Venn Diagram). Input output analysis is alluded to and attention is drawn to the importance of efficiency through appropriate sequencing of techniques. The use of RRA in the agro-ecosystem approach, a systems approach to regions, concluded his consideration of these processes.
