“I Remember” [Reflections On Book - 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design Stephen Heller and Veronique Vienne - #85]

Well I remember as a kid,
How mom and cohort put a lid
On comic-content of the day;
One decade on, it came to stay.

As graphic novels it exists,
But Mad was mild in satire’s risks,
Compared to plants that grew from there –
Acme, and Blimp, and Zap – compare –

In no way to what’s mainstream now,
With sex, and booze, and drugs, somehow
Assumed to be okay as fare
For one and all, who fabric tear –

Of social life – but think a bit –
It’s nothing new – Britt drugs once ripped
Up India, then China too;
And Al Capone kept flow of booze.

The sex-trade ancient is as sport
Of Kings and commoners – reports
Were hushed up – Kennedy was one
Whose antics secretly were done.

And so it is today, as well,
As corporations make life hell
For cottage-labor globally
That Yanks can do life greedily.

Iconic graphic-artists work
Behind the scenes – we’re all berserk,
With dual standards – bubble was
Our sphere of innocence because –

Queen Vicky once said be discreet,
Which trickled down to easy street;
But underneath the pavement ours,
Flowed sewage which the viewpoint sours.

Thanks Lord for this.
