“El Comino, Mas Excelente” (1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13] [Spanish Jerusalem Bible series]
And there it was, “Camino” – “way”,
Like “El Comino”, Spaniards say
Is road of pilgrimage today,
Which ancient peoples chose as way –To freshen up their daily walk
With Christ; for on it they would talk,
And a joke around, as we do now –
Our daily journeys helped somehow.I heard the passage (English text)
As “Way” not “Road” – did not object
To “Spiritual” – and “Inner way”
But here, “Camino” makes it say –“It’s more than pleasant thoughts here, guys –
The road is concrete – asphalt – wise
It is – Paul’s “Road” is practical –
Thus, what he shares is tactical.From there he launches his fair words,
Which oft at wedding times are heard –
“Talk’s cheap, close love must deeper be;
And practical – that’s plain to see.“Camino” – road – “More excellent” –
Than what? Than “Gifts” – that’s what is meant;
Good as they are, be careful, boys,
Lest faith you live is so much noise.Lord, this is awesome – image great!
“Camino” – daily walk each makes;
A pilgrimage is sweat, and toil,
And pilgrims who make tempers boil.But what I hear – this word makes clear –
“Camino”, as we all drawn near
The citadel to which we head –
Keep eyes fixed on our road ahead –But even more, now, look around
At fellow-pilgrims on the ground
With each of us – what are their needs
As we press on, and Spirit leads?For if we think we’re “All alone
With Jesus” on our road to home,
We’re not – it’s “Body-life indeed;
So take a look at others’ needs.Lord, that’s so helpful – “Pilgrimage”,
But on a road, with hopes engaged;
Help us to ponder each long mile,
