"Te" [Gross and Shapiro - Tao Of Photography - Reflections - pp.42-47] (1 Corinthians 12)

In world of photographic dance we do,
The ‘Te’ is seen in us; in what they do
Who live before our lens, and demonstrate
What we ourselves in working illustrate.

The hope is both will happen all the time;
We enter into crafting’s world sublime,
While objects of our view present once more
Examples of this aspect we adore.

I call it, “Sparkle”; “Punch”; some, “Impact” or
“The stopping power” of photographs before
Which we can see that “Something” – that’s the ‘Te’
In what’s depicted or depiction’s way.

Apostle Paul aligns it with our gifts –
Not built-in-ones, but those by which God lifts
Us from the mean and mean to meaning more,
In craft or task we do, have done before.

Result it is of harmony between
Our cutting knife, whose edge is honed to keen,
But, slipping through the gaps between the joints
Is never dulled – our skill on it anoints –

It’s target with experience of ‘Te’;
Like coach or counselor whose way
Is felt to be experience of skill,
Empowered by God’s power behind a will.

One time I filmed a man for CBC
Who crafted violins – fine work indeed;
His skill exceeded mine in camera craft –
I captured ‘Te’ despite myself and laughed –

At my presumption on his precious time;
Commitment to improve in skill was mine;
That’s what it does – inspires to higher plane
Our craftsmanship, now seen as quite mundane.

But how to enter into world of ‘Te’?
Participate ourselves, don’t just convey
The images of craftsmen and their craft –
That’s purpose of this book – a precious fact.
