"When Giving's Interactive" [#17] (Matt 6:1-4)

In days of old – well, old for me,
Like back when I was twenty-three,
My giving was in olden style –
Both quiet, and with inner smile.

“ God loves a cheerful giver, Stu,
So smile when you your giving do”,
I’d learned; and as a giver-type,
I’d give my gifts – it felt all right.

Then later I grew up some more,
Big Bobby showed what giving’s for –
“It calms the storm in midst of it,
If you’re on track and doing it –

“You’ve done your part, so best calm down;
Just keep your feet upon the ground;
For givers need the river’s flow
If they’re to know that life will go.”

Then Andy came along and said
His inter-active view – “Instead
Of active, passive, giving life,
Go interactive you like –

As Jesus did long years ago;
In ‘active willingness’ there’s flow,
Not by yourself, alone as gift,
But interactive – gives a lift –

“To self and others in God’s plan;
Do ‘this and that’, by which God can
Have room to operate with ease –
A gift’s a part of that”, says he.

The part I like about this piece,
Is privacy, where we’re released
To keep it all twixt us and God,
Like when our gifts seem rather odd.

My giver-gift is second string;
Encouragement through gifts I bring;
Here ‘private’ works quite well for me,
To which Christ’s words set people free.
