What’s Going On? (John 1:5)

“What’s going on ’round here?” They ask,
As they perform policing tasks;
“It’s never been like this before”,
Well, no, not here, but far, far more –

Of this has happened ’round the globe;
Down through the ages we’ve been told
A thousand times, “Stay on alert –
He prowls, and seeks whom he can hurt”.

It may well be a shift takes place
At borderlands of gross disgrace;
Not “All or nothing” – evil stays
At forty-nine percent most days.

And then it tips to fifty-one,
Then day of nasty stuff’s begun;
So ask, “What caused that shift today?”
And “How might good come into play?”

For one or two percent will change
Things back – this city rearrange;
We say, “This little thing – who cares?
No matter here or anywhere”.

But yes, it does – some little thing
Is all it takes to evil bring
Up to a place where atmosphere
Of evil’s seen in actions here.

Take New York City years ago –
Graffiti, windows, broken doors,
And trash just dropped out on the street –
When fixed, the wave of crime was beat.

For evil’s always part of life;
John’s Gospel speaks of campfire light
Which pushes back encircling night –
Fifty percent – locale of flight.
