London Update

So what’s transpired since we were there
In London conference – to prepare
For missions work with other folk?
Transformed we were by words they spoke.

They taught about cross-culture shock
(Describing road which I’d just walked);
And spent three days role-playing games
Of culture-entry – different names.

They’d spent a month at language school;
We joined them then (we broke the rules
And went when we had done one year;
By then the issues were quite clear).

Back then it was, “The Third World” scene;
The second (“Iron Curtain”), seemed
That it would last forever more –
Such was the backdrop at our door.

The shift to local leadership
Was on the cusp – we trained for it;
Within three years shift would be made,
In that my future path was laid.

But that was forty years ago –
Was speaker born? What would he know
Of life we led, of challenge faced
As we prepared to take our place?

Some things have changed for all of us,
But breath of Spirit midst the fuss
Was felt in speaker – setting theme
Of missions conference – where we’d been.

“Perhaps God does not see the world
As problem to be fixed, but curled
Up in his lap – like child and dad
Conversing ’bout the day each had.

“Perhaps God craves relationship
As we our children – as they slip
Out on their own, try wings and fly,
Come springing back and question why.

“Today we look at mission-task
But underneath we’d better ask
That question – “Who is God to us
And us to Him within this muss?”
