His Thoughtful Sticky Notes

“I used to do these sticky notes within my head”, he said,
“But now I use the paper kind ’cause parts of brain are dead;
I used to grasp with agile mind the words and thoughts I stored,
But now they fail to come to me, like when my mind’s absorbed –

“In making them emerge for me, to serve me as before;
But that won’t happen, so I let them go for something more –
My life with you without that thought, idea, name, or word,
For we’re together, here, today, to each we’re seen and heard.

“So let’s create a moment now, in present be as one,
For so we are in Christ”, he said, “and someday we’ll become,
Some other being in this world, and later up in heaven;
I’m here with you, today – God’s gift of salt, and light, and leaven.

“Perhaps my presence here today will lighten up your world;
Fluff up your being like when yeast is put in batter, swirled;
Perhaps some flavor of your life, enhanced by added salt,
Will make the people ’round you rich, and for your life exalt.

“So please don’t mind if, while we talk, I write a sticky note;
Or if I tape this chat with you to capture when we spoke;
I used to be like you, my friend, I’d hold such in my mind,
But if I do not write it down, then I’ll be in a bind –

“For written word enables me to hear again what’s said;
Like chewing cud, I like to mix such thoughts – see where I’m led;
But if I’m left just with the thoughts I gathered as a child,
My life is not as rich as now you’ve stopped by here a while.”
