More Than Conquerors (Romans 8:35-37)

Remembrance Day – we conquered them that time,
Those years ago – like in those books of mine;
That time of change – machines beefed up to blow
Slow changing minds – refused new ways to know.

We fight as well, here in our daily lives;
Foes shift and change though larger group survives;
Like cattle chute – pressed in with little room,
Pursued behind, no brightening time at noon.

Or, lacking food; or season’s changing clothes;
War strikes our time, when danger comes like those
Who died those years when world convulsed with change;
Our fights we have, as life is rearranged.

Christ works for us – the meaning of that word
“Agape-love” – good news the day we heard;
Paul asks us here, “Who generates the space
Between Christ’s work, and our conflicted race?”

Fact is, we’re like ground pork or pattied beef –
Grist for the mill, while others quiet sleep –
It’s dog eat dog here in the business life,
Temptation is to enter in the strife.

Christ works for us – brings options to the fore;
A way around attrition’s call for more
Young men to die in futile battle lines;
Win-win’s the game – for which God gives us minds.

Sure we could fight and be the conqueror;
Wear fancy garb; sound pipes and drums once more;
In Christ we’re more – much better way to live
Our business lives, as we fair-dealing give.

It’s not enough to say, “I’m pacifist”;
We need to stop, give life a better twist;
Let Christ help out, infuse creative minds,
’Till righteousness replaces guns and mines.
