“The Infinite” [language series]

We live our lives in finite terms,
And from our verb-forms we can learn
If what is said is in the past,
Or future – or right now – I asked –

Then what’s “Infinitive” as term?
It doesn’t fit, and yet we learn
To conjugate (still gives me chills
To think of that – such fun it kills).

Well, “Unrelated to all time” –
That’s how I’d put it – quite sublime –
When at the beach; on holidays –
Past, present, future no part plays.

Like “Infinite”, on Kingdom-layer –
Detached from whirl of finite players;
El molinillo’s constant whirl
Distorts our lives here on the world.

Or, think of heavens so full of stars
So far away from one that’s ours;
They seem so still, no present, past,
Or future, in a space so vast.

But that’s illusion – they whirl ’round,
Enchanting here without a sound,
But fiery in reality,
Black holes, and quarks – tempestuous sea.

So, “Finite” forms let us spell out
For other listeners, leave no doubt,
Where we have been, and when; and where
We are right now – and future cares.

“Infinitive” – “Detached from time”,
Has uses too, its role’s sublime –
“I wish; I want; desire to be,
In state of doing that – you see?”

“Or being that; or feeling, too;
Detach from time – when I’m with you
Time flies, or drags in infinite;
A state of mind where we can sit –

Lost in a campfire’s evening glow;
Lost in some ruptured tune we know;
Lost in a canyon’s Majesty;
Lost in the infinite with Thee.

That is a special place we go;
It’s of the best of life we know –
When dis-engaged from time’s demands,
“Infinite” verb-form under-stands.

Thanks Lord for this.
