“How Far?” [1 Corinthians 9 – sermon series reflection]

“How far would you go, mister man,
To save a friend, if saving can
Be seen as something needing done,
With escapade not being fun?”

So asked the preacher there today
As music-people paused to play
A video of Jesus’ prayer
Sung out, to children’s lessons share.

“Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done”
Had echoes still with sermon done;
Would you give up some food you liked?
Lay down your life if it felt right?

Who knows – that bunch were heavy hit
In World War I – rushed to enlist;
“We lost a generation’s boys,”
My grandma said – “for more than noise –

“For talk is cheap, and lives are dear”;
Lay down your life? It would appear
That Baptists did, far more than most;
Would they still now? I doubt that boast.

Like Neufies blown to bits that day,
It left its mark – would they still pay
Such cost for freedom in our land?
“War’s stupid,” they now understand.

I sense the sweep of human flow
In language trail – we partly know
That wars and fleeing from their wrath
Have left a trail of tears from past.

Lord, question asked in church today,
As we sang words Christ taught to pray,
Leave question open – “What of you?
Would you lay down a life renewed?”

Lord, I don’t know – but here’s the piece –
Now is the time to self release;
Not later when all hell breaks loose,
But now, when shoes are worn, not boots.

Thanks Lord for this.
