“The Pledge” [Philippian Series – 1:1-6]

So take a cold shower for Jesus;
Come here sign your name on this pledge;
Each Monday you’ll start being joyful;
Start now living out on the edge.

I turned to the lady beside me,
And asked if she thought it would work –
Four months ’till he’s finished his series –
On joy – Phlipping cold brings a smirk –

But then he said, “Joy is in choosing
A happier time on this earth;
Cold showers bring showers of blessing,
Like joy after mothers give birth.”

Okay, cold it is Monday morning,
With smiles and a joyful veneer;
Despite the cold shock to the system,
I’ll choose joy and brush away tears.

So how does one thaw out a Baptist?
Bring joy to a Baptist’s sad state?
“Just sit in their section, let Jesus
Shine through you – in that you awake –

“Like jolt of cold water – refreshing,
And calling to mind monks of old
Ascetics in desert perspiring
So Jesus can carry their load.”

Okay, fourteen views of Paul’s letter,
With joy-theme the center of each –
Five places, three sections – I’ll be there
As Paul on this subject will teach.

Not preach – for there’s never a pledge card
Committing to showers or Christ,
Just edging us closer to joyful
Away from demeanors uptight.

Lord, up on this layer of plastic,
I ask what Your joy is about;
“It’s all about Spirit-life through you,
A happier walking about.

“Mnemonic device is the shower,
So Mondays start weeks with a smile;
‘Turn cold on for Jesus’ c-cold-like,
And let it sink in for a while.

“By summer your gaze in the mirror
Perhaps will show signs of pure joy;
Give Spirit some room so My presence,
Shines through like when you were a boy.

Thanks Lord for this.
