“On Meeting Nico” (Genesis Ch.48; Numbers 7:22-27; Matt.19:13-14)
First “Luc the Duke”, “Amazing Grace”, now “Jolly old St. Nick” –
I’ve met the first three on the block, am glad because of it;
Met Nico last night – Winnipeg, we got there through the storm,
Then stayed the night in Grand Hotel so we’d be nice and warm.First thing you did when I said “Hi” was grin – at four months old;
Your feet came to the end of snowsuit, leaving not a fold;
You laughed and chuckled ’till you slept (except that blast of cold –
For minus fifteen was like where St. Nick lives, we are told).Well, welcome to our family, friend Nico, glad you’re here;
I hope you like your countries – each quite different, that is clear;
But hey! Just like a bridge you are, one foot upon each bank,
With mom from one, and dad from one – two people you can thank.Unique you are, just like each one in world of which you’re part;
As you step up to take your place I hope this piece of art
Reminds you someday down the road, we met, and said hello;
And that this part of family has blessed you where you go –So, “May God bless you, as He blessed the sons of Joseph, Nick;
That’s Ephraim as one son, and Manasseh – ’cause of it,
Each Friday night (or Saturday), folks all around bless kids;
We bless you now, as long before you came into our midst –“The Lord bless you and keep you, Nick; God lift His eyes on you;
Be gracious unto you, and lift His countenance on you;
And give you peace – Amen” (which means, in ancient Hebrew tongue,
“So be it” – implementing words of blessing, like this one).First Christmas here, in Canada! Adventure, yes indeed!
First cold; first snow; first Santa Claus; first sleigh-ride? You might see
That one can have a good time in the cold, or in the sun;
It’s all a part of God’s great earth – and as His folks, we’re one.Welcome home, Nico.
Thanks for this, Lord.
