"The A.T. Vision " [Reflections On Book - 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design Stephen Heller and Veronique Vienne - # 1]
It’s there, exciting, yes indeed,
Yet not quite there – mind’s eye it feeds;
Augmented text for novel forms,
The core for me – these tweak the norms.“The book”, a lab right from the first,
Container neutral at its worst
But integrated image, text,
Can now be staged to dance their best.New layers of perception rise
As text brings mental pictures, sized
Into infinity’s deep space;
Design of book has plain replaced.The narrative it complements;
The paper’s texture conjures sense;
Fine cut of type; styled running-head;
One’s central comp. lets eye be led –Along, across, and down the page –
In Alphabet Fred Gaudy laid
Out type for book which he designed
At 1918’s printing time.The varied type in size and font
In Marinetti’s book would flaunt
His daring-do in Zang Thumb Tuuum,
Insisting market yield him room.Lissitzky, poet Vladamir,
Transformed to pictograms – made clear
How best to read aloud his stuff,
In book from that the designer’s touch.Depero’s Futurista, bound
With bolts, gave energy like found
Like ride in high-speed vehicle –
A cotter-pin-type-miracle.Lord, as I learn these building blocks,
Help me each novel now unlock,
That each one’s spirit, first discerned,
Might be released, that readers learn –Your words, “Like facets of some jewel”;
Like Proverbs’ wisdom, helping fools;
Enriching Wisemen; training Saints;
And for the rest great vistas paint.Thanks Lord for this.
