“Guns”

He walked that evening into church
In uniform, and there was perched
Upon his hip his pistol butt;
Said nothing – presence was enough.

Cops do that periodically –
Drive ’round the streets so people see
Them keeping law and order first –
Preventing trouble’s latent worst.

If they stayed home, or drove around
In unmarked cars, there would be found
A lawless place ’round here indeed,
As on the highways people speed.

Why now? The Paris incidents
Last week – disaster, troubles – hence,
A need to quiet people down
And say, “We’re watching in our town”.

So, “Nice play, Shakespeare”, to that man;
For any crowd of people can
Have in their head heuristically
A way to process what they see –

That needs addressing – cut them slack;
You’ve got your problems which they lack;
MYOB; get on with life;
Let them address their kinds of strife.

Thanks Lord for this.
