Summer Manitoba

Though there’s thunder in the offing, there is sunshine here right now;
Carol’s off to Moose Jaw meeting – I’ll be working here – somehow
Get a day of renovations done before the sun has set,
On this first day of the summer – ’bout as good as it can get.

Dew is heavy on the windshield, grass is wet beneath my feet;
Sun makes shadows of the tree trunks in the Aspen ’cross the street;
Folks are now just rising early on this Shabbat morning sweet,
Yawn and stretch, get cups of coffee, as this morning scene they greet.

As the breezes start the motion in the leaves in our front yard,
Crows and song-birds set the music midst their life which can be hard;
Makes me think that “home alone”, though not as fun as when she’s here,
Has its renovation pleasures which bring melodies of cheer.

It’s a year since we got flooded, narrow miss again this time –
Generator and two sump-pumps, big stone wall – we made out fine;
Rain came down in deluge steady, power out for half an hour;
Flipped the switch and pulled the starter – bingo – we were back with power.

But this morning all’s forgotten, like the passing of a dream;
Just like camping in the summer, present’s all that summer means;
Yes, from now the days get shorter, fall and winter soon will come,
But in Manitoba summers, life is great beneath the sun.

Thanks Lord for this.
