100-K

Some years ago they made the choice to grow,
For thirty-five's untenable, you know;
They had a choice – fall back to twenty-K,
Or push on through – one hundred thousand, say.

They made that choice – that big hotel in town,
Gave signal to the world – "We’re upward bound";
The plant came in, brought workers from abroad;
They chose to grow, new options, breaking sod.

So when you look around at this fair town,
And ask yourself, "What life in it is found?"
I hope you see the courage in that step,
And hear us say, "You ain't seen nothing yet!"

The choice was hard, not all of us agreed;
They are our friends and neighbors who have need
Of help – for all they knew quite changed would be
Now it's one-hundred-K we strive to be.

That's what's behind the bold casino talk;
It's part of growth, it's how they chose to walk;
You need to split two factors in that mix,
If you're to lead – community is mixed.

And take downtown; and Corral Center stores;
The miles of paths; and roller Park; and more –
It's all about a life out here renewed –
First Baptist Church – you'll note its building new.

In Winnipeg, St. Norbert was a place
Engulfed – I saw huge changes that church faced –
From rural Kirk, pump organ, twenty pews,
To mega-church – old-timers not amused.

At fifty-K a town grows up and shifts;
Now room for two of everything exists;
That in itself is challenge to us all,
So, welcome home – as you start up this fall.
