I Wonder

“I saw you there that day I preached,
And thought, 'I wonder what he’s reached
As insight or concluding thought,
From word I speak, as man of God?'”

He asked, and so I answered him,
“Quite often as I through words swim,
I do not listen to, but through,
Sometimes to God, sometimes to you.

“Last week I heard your journey-tale,
With journey's words you did regale
Us with your story – blind and dumb –
How God made clear what He has done.

“Reminded me of ninety-five,
When “Works Of Power” came alive;
It scared be-Jesus out of me,
And sent me fast to bended knee.

“Paul said to ‘covet’ higher gifts,
For most of us we’d rather miss
Their presence in our bright career,
So pray, ‘God get them out of here!’

“Paul said, ‘Hang loose, it’s not so bad,
Besides, in them life’s to be had;
What God assigns, He graces too,
So when He speaks His words to you –

“Say, ‘Yes, of course’, jump up and run,
For fast-response augments the fun;
His timing’s great, though when we’re slow,
At least one part of it will go.

“For me it’s taken many years,
Frustrations mine, sometimes with tears,
To get myself out of His way,
So Spirit has some room to play.”

And that, my man, is what I heard –
Your journey-yarn’s confirming word:
God’s work is started soon enough
To get ’er done ’fore things get rough.

So carry on; fall on your face;
The way to up is down, disgrace;
For when we die, new life springs up;
Cross-bearing load is good, but tough.
