Commitment

Some people have a problem with a covenant of love,
Preferring just to keep such things for Father up above;
But I say ‘No’, there is a place for covenants below,
For in such pacts we say we'll act out from the love we know.

It's not that we will always be example of the best,
More that when we encounter need we'll do our very best
To lend a hand, or heart, or voice, to help them from the ditch;
And wish them well not just in words – in ways we can assist.

There's Nuns who make commitments for duration of their lives,
And Sisters who sign for one year in whom commitment thrives;
Some churches seek a long-term pledge of life within their band,
While others say "One year, and then examine where you stand".

In Washington there is a church which works the latter way –
October comes, "To sign or not" is order of the day;
Their church arose from Second War, and need for deeper faith;
They set the bar extremely high – renewal time as base.

Perhaps it's time to take that route, but shift it back to June;
Then set some time to think each spring (one year is not too soon),
If I will spend another year within the covenant –
"A year of living biblically" as focus out in front.

A covenant's a two-way street, like marriage in my home –
Commitment to walk hand-in-hand as through this world we roam –
Not by our strength, but graced by God, eyes opened to the need
Our brothers and our sisters have, response in word and deed.

I'm Creenglish, living in a land of cultures quite diverse,
So I must choose a way to live in kingdom that's inverse
To how life is celestially, live out the best I know;
As to the rest, to others leave, as forward I would go.

James says, "Hold on – ‘if in God's will I will do such and such’
Are better words, what e’er we do (perhaps it isn't much);
For we don't know what will befall as we walk down some lane;
Perhaps it's best I add those words, as I in Christ remain.
