The Bowl-ing League
Astounded I at all the chiefs
Who then arrived and took their seats
To ponder actions of the clan,
To guide with skill how outfit ran.To this group fell “Co-ordinate
The worship time – smooth service make;
See to the growth of our fair clan –
Salt, light, and leaven for the land.No doubt the others had their tasks,
And sometime I could questions ask
About their realms of sweeping power
Which manifested in this hour.“There is a book of policy”,
The chairman said, “which you can read;
It covers all decisions made –
Our bricks upon foundations laid.”My thoughts went back to what I’d heard
Of fiscal problems I’d observed;
Of women’s group from ancient times
Succumbing now to modern minds.I viewed their shiny edifice,
So well laid out – I’m quite impressed –
With parking lot quite bare most days,
Though rented out when client pays.I thought of that suggestion made –
In edifice of old there’s laid
Potential to help out somehow –
To indigent new life allow.So fragile is their base support;
“A compromise of last resort”;
Where chiefs come by to set the stage
No Indians once rules are made.For action is defined as rules;
A worship short; small Sunday school;
Take those away and what remains?
Not much – thus life stays much the same.Now I applied six months ago;
Then not so much as, “Hey! – hello”.
A large percentage of the folk
Adherents are – some kind of joke?“Where could you see yourself in?”
“How about if I with cans begin?
Like ‘thirty days for everyone’;
That seems a context for some fun!“For Jesus took a towel and a bowl,
And washed their feet, refreshed each soul;
If that caught on, (and Chiefs agreed),
We’d have a second bowling league.”navigation
