The Shift From Sales To Sales

“I used to be in sales”, he said
But from that task I then was led;
‘So here’s the deal’, ‘Some yes; some no –
Don’t mind at all – just onward go’ –

“That’s what they taught in selling school;
I learned that job – techniques were cool;
So now I’m saying, ‘Here’s the deal –
Trade your old life for something real’.

“At first I thought my skill won’t fit,
But now I hunch, because of it
I think I’ve found my niche, I’d say;
And so I’ll try it out today.

“An altar call – old fashion way;
In that I know just what to say;
I’ve got some staff to lend a hand,
As I try out Evangel’s stand.”

A gutsy move – I would assess
Your first attempt a huge success!
For shifting from what is not to you
To who you are – you look the fool.

That always is the way, my friend,
So push on through – you’ll comprehend
The workings of your process’ ways
Quite soon – it’s one that really pays.

You’re right – your story is the place
To start – like Hydro in your case –
You came alive; folks sat right up;
And could relate to theft of stuff.

“But phys-ed also was my past”,
I hear you say, “that was a blast –
Where does that fit? Does it translate?”
Of course – as coach – at that you’re great!

Just listen to your words today:
“Do come to chat – I’ll show the way
To share your faith, ‘evangelize’
Discipleship will help you rise –

“Up to the task you wish to do,
(Not half as boring as at school);
We’ll keep it tailored to your way,
And help you find your way to say –

“What’s most important in your life,
To others in the midst of strife;
But for today, I’ll walk ahead,
Give altar-call to raise the dead.”

I note as well in e-mail chats,
How doors are closed – a problem that,
If you are now to call the lost,
Discipleship’s now seen as cost.

A selling job must first be done:
“How newer folks increase the fun”.
Theology demarks the gate
Lest newer folks participate.

Each church is like a family;
Church membership, as you will see
Is family plan, controlled so they
One clan, in unity might stay.

Just think – bring in three-hundred more
This year – then tally up the score:
Hispanics, Poles, Chinese, and Blacks;
You’ll hear – “Please give our family back!”

At first they’ll say, “Oh thank you Lord,
For letting Spanish hear Your Word;
For bringing Chinese to our church”;
(Words coming from a high-up perch).

But six weeks in – a fresh new tone,
“Thanks Lord, for bringing from their homes,
These white Caucasians – we’ll translate
Our Spanish as they congregate.”

Percentage-new, when trouble comes?
It’s twenty – so the theory runs;
Go over that of the new-to-old,
Then great affront you will behold.

So – “Come to church; don’t tarry here;
Our doors are closed, though they appear
To open be – we’re family –
“Full” (speaking sociologically).

So train your members all you wish;
Disciple them to place of bliss;
But they’ll not call the lost and lone
To come to church and swamp their home.

That’s what I meant in words before,
When I first knocked on your front door:
One million-five – the cost to find,
The fix for what you have in mind.

From “pre-aware” to now “aware”
Is where you are, so tarry there;
Play with that thought, and try it on;
I think you’ll find I’m not far wrong.

God gives us each the spouse we need,
So when we’re stuck, we can proceed;

It is the key to help you look.
