Horse Sense

Just feed the pond, and not the fish;
Don’t feed the puppy, feed the dish;
Just put the feed there in the trough;
They know when they have had enough.

An open mouth, like open mind
Is meant to close, so don’t be blind –
Stand back and let them come to you –
They read your tells in what you do.

When mouths are closed it’s just to chew;
When they are done they swallow too;
And they digest; eject manure;
And from the best draw health and cure.

So too with minds, they learn new ways,
But must decide that learning pays;
So once they see their benefit,
Just walk, and let them think on it.

Then comes that magic moment when
The horse comes up behind, and then,
With nose on shoulder asks, “Some more?
I’m back again, my friend, Lenore.”
