Seasons Of My Soul
I panic when I hear the geese –
The winter comes with sounds like these,
And I'm not done my summer tasks –
I lack control as in the past.Where are those lazy summer days
Of quiet walks and warming rays?
I think I've got that figured out –
There's just one third or there about –Of frost-three days in this fair land,
Yet images we understand
Arise in southern USA –
Of quiet nights and lazy days.In Costa Rica there's no bales
Of hay because they've frost free days
Throughout the year – three sixty-five –
Rotating stock keeps them alive.Not here – we have one hundred ten
Until the days have frost again;
Unless there's ways to lengthen days,
One-third the year is all that pays.So maybe I should key my plan
To seasons in this chilly land;
The cold removes the spiders, snakes;
Disease control the cold creates.So that creates some health for us,
And freedom here from danger's fuss;
While autumn comes with bracing air,
And joy of spring they don't have there.It's just my time is oh so short –
So many different kinds of work
Await attention – energy?
It dissipates, the moments flee.The errors and mistakes I make,
The moments when I hesitate,
The things forgotten, things misplaced,
Cut into time, seem such a waste.And yet, when I consider me
At sixty-four, efficiency
Is also part of life – I know,
I see it in the words which flow.But even there, what of my brain?
Will it in older age sustain
The weight of load I give to it?
And will in time it still be fit?So, geese above mark season's shift,
Speak to my heart, depress, don't lift;
So maybe I should now agree
To change the attitude in me.For look at geese – they face the guns
Of hunters in their yearly runs,
As they fulfill their earthly days –
By gracing tables with our praise.So what's my problem? Quiet here;
Few hostile guns we people fear;
There are some pros, and many cons;
But hey – this autumn time's not gone.So let's weigh out the days ahead,
And savour each, before were dead;
Who cares? Just live out life as best
We can each day – ignore the rest.navigation
