A Choice Of Memories
Vinedresser chooses what branches to keep;
Cuts where there's sickness, though waste makes Him weep;
Health quick restores like when bush is cut back;
Life works around all the parts which we lack.When road divides, takes a fork in the wood,
We needst let go and forget it we should;
Energy put to the path we're on –
Don't agonize over choice that's now gone.Life weaves around like that play-acting game
Roll with live music, it's rarely the same;
It's not a science, exacting, precise –
We make out fine – ’bout three quarters is nice.Task which I've done has a hazard built-in –
Had to remember the places I've been –
Journaling, poetry, pictures, and art,
Paper trail left of my life – though in part.Now that I'm finished, it's time to let go,
Hold on to fragments of truth I now know;
Take up new journeys, see what's up today,
Toss out the garbage which gets in the way.Carried the church thing, at least UCC;
Proved to be useful, it's been part of me;
Can't lose the good for it's where I have been;
Bad part must go for it's riddled with sin.Pathology lingers with those who've now gone,
Learning from dead what exactly went wrong;
One of the places they look for the truth
So all do better – select different route.Coal miners, doctors, and guys on the rigs,
Different the hazards in different gigs;
For me it's dwelling on what cannot be,
Keeping the parts once a pattern I see.Pathologists mess with the bodies and gore,
Time that I jettison aspects of past,
Finding new aspects by probing some more;
Then they head homeward, leave written report,
Sometimes make statements of findings in court.
Job in forensics is finished at last;
Let go of body-parts pulled from the scene;
Report my findings from where I have been.Identification with corpse on the slab –
Useful for finding the truth in a lab;
Moccasin-walking once done in one’s task –
Best left behind, once the questions are asked.Sandy, Keewatin, and White Bear are done,
Those were some places where working was fun;
Helping the students choose courses to take –
That was a task I was glad to partake.Long-term assessment (church antics in past),
Food for my thinking – much more than I'd asked;
He had me gather experience first
Then had me sift through the rubble – my worst.Companies, business, and financing parts,
Still holds some aspects for post-mortem parts;
But like my seedlings for garden display,
Some will get planted – the rest thrown away.Maybe it's time to throw business stuff out –
It just supported my quest-journey route:
Part that's remaining – the rest of my task,
Doesn't demand that I questions there ask.When dad retired he let go and moved on,
Chucked all the stuff from the time that was gone;
Taking up life which had fallen aside,
Lived out his days with a heck of a ride.What are the things which I need for today?
Maybe give thought as I live out these days,
Till this next weekend with forty years won,
Like dad in farming – with eighty years done.Second careers caught my fancy before,
Trouble with pensions encourage them more;
It's an approach that's appealing to me –
One week to think what that package could be.navigation
