Victory Lap
The hardest was the tea-towels, the dishcloth, and the sheets;
Not furniture, or trinkets, the scrubbing-pad or cleats;
Somehow I saw the effort you made to get back up
From impact with the bottom, for it was pretty rough.You made it, these but imprints of where your tires have been;
You faced a new beginning – to us no tear was seen;
But breaking down the condo to ready it for sale
Has given me an insight to just how strong the gale.I'm glad it came in stages, these three years just now past;
It's eased the dis-engagement for me – it's come at last;
But you're back on your feet now and coping well with life,
No doubt they'll be some hassles, perhaps a bit of strife.Transition from our school days is tough these days for kids --
Economy is rotten, the myth is go “self biz”;
Or work at “Happy Fritters” though minimum the wage,
And pay your student loans down, as future you engage.A hit or two, a stumble, an arrow from the dark,
When cruising at the midpoint can sink a little bark;
But getting up to surface's imperative to do,
These furnishings the ladder I saw you climb, you too.The car, the condo, dishes, the fast food on the job;
The friends, the party-making, the heartache with its sobs;
The struggles to get over your past and present days;
The choice to relocate now to job that better pays.So, son, though dish-rags hardest for me to gather up,
It speaks to meet of victory, of triumph’s trophy cup;
I'm proud of you for taking your future life head on,
And pushing through as winner, to hear that victory song.No matter what now happens, the high days and the low,
This climb up from the bottom was true – I've seen it – so
Keep looking to your future, live present and look back –
For this caps off your history, and that, my friend, is that.navigation
