Sadness

How deep the sadness of my soul
As life goes onward, eastward rolls
Into the day not yet begun,
With sky-blue-pink of setting sun.

The stillness of the evening air
Speaks to my numbing soul's despair –
“I'm glad we took our summer trip”;
“Let's stop in autumn sun a bit”.

“A grief observed”, book Lewis wrote
Of grief profound, in words he spoke
To ease the pain in loss of wife –
Of close companion, friend through life.

Mom said a consolation prize
Awaits when tears pass from our eyes;
What prize could fill this empty space?
Though glad for her in any case.

Thoughts tumble deep inside my mind
Kaleidoscopic, void of rhyme
Or reason, just a jumbled mess
Of future loss, and restlessness.

No loss prepares one for the next;
We're struck with shock, our feelings less;
I've lost a lot of this and that,
But naught prepares for coming rack.

Keep me, O Lord, from shutting down,
From pushing back as help surrounds
Us on our journey on from here;
With courage face the rising fear.

The clay flows smooth through fingers bare,
Expressing deep unspoken care;
Help me, O Lord, get through this night,
And face tomorrow's present fight.

Thanks.
