Peace

“And peace which passes understanding
Will keep your hearts and minds
In Jesus’ love”, and there abiding
Do work of different kind.

Awoke just now those words were floating
Around my sleepy thoughts;
Lay on my back, just like when floating
On water as I ought.

For now it's gone, that churning struggle
Of days before the start,
Where thoughts and options make a muddle
Of what might be my part.

For now I heard Paul's words quite different,
As one out there like me,
Not one just bright, and holy, reverent,
But one put out to sea.

For you, O Lord, worked homeland turf,
Sent others over wall;
Then died and said you'd come for us,
Take us and be with all –

Out here where giver-land was hosting
Our lives in culture fair;
In hearts like ours where we'd be posting
Your words to ease despair.

We're not here first – prepared our ways for
Our walks, and talks, and works;
We follow in your steps right here, Lord,
Well-paid with cash and perks.

For somewhere ’round you have provided
For all our living needs;
Like treasure hunt, I've now decided,
And carrots grown from seeds.

Lord, as we make our way each morning,
Lead us where we will find
Our needs fulfilled, and ample warning
Of dangers we should mind.

That when each day of work is ending,
And home we come once more,
Our burdens leave, with peace descending,
With rest from daily chores.

Lord, thanks for this from one unable
To be at peace within;
The gracious feeding at your table,
Relieves from where I've been.
