Disengagement

It's hard to disengage from war these days I find
As battle ends, old tasks fall by, and I new duties find;
I guess it's that way, win or lose, for all whose time has come
To stand down and walk away once more.

Three years of seasons, Christmas, New Year's, Summer’s special trips;
With cold, the heat, frustrations – come to grips;
Attempts to entertain self on those lonely nights;
Attempts that failed to push away the fright.

It's not that battles are for all complete
More that for me time changes all, and now I meet
The challenge of a shift from duties done
To newer times, new distances to run.

I'm glad we get a break, a change of scene,
To clear my head, return refreshed again
And face both life and death of friends and foes,
For so it is, as every soldier knows.
