Arrogance
The arrogance of folks up top
Who ’midst the clouds of ether walk
Is ’nuff to drive me nuts I’d say,
Perhaps because I walk that way:The movers and the shaker-types
Who strut their stuff – “not me you're like”;
A pissing contest twixt us men;
“Aha! I'll beat you all again”.Why can't we just converse each day
About the things which to us pay
Rich dividends of meaning fair,
Which to our souls provide our air?For guys it's all about our work;
We hate the ones who think us jerks;
I coveted a culture big,
Four years since I gave up that gig –But not because I wanted to.
More, recognized “I wasn't you”
Which brought relief deep in my soul
But cut my ties with those I know;And took me down a path in life
Which put me deep in culture's strife;
And dropped my status base in eyes
Of those excluders I despise.Yet that's the part I share with them,
The part I hate in me – ahem!
What crazy folks we seem to be –
I hate the very stuff that's “me”.Yet ‘covered’ is that fact of sin
By your own blood – we rise again
Not from our efforts in the race,
But from the help, Lord, of your Grace.So why are we so prone to brag
When really we’re a wrung-out rag?
Perhaps because we've so much stuff –
Yet emptiness cries “not enough.”.“Big picture see”, said Nee – step one;
“God starts each step” – part two – now done;
For “By God's power alone’s the way”
“To God the Glory ” ends the day.The first two parts I've come to see
As they sink deep inside of me;
The third is lesson under way,
A base required that fourth can sway.For funds, resource, and all we are,
Are there as matching funds by Gar
Which set us free to make things bang
As in the book God's kids once sang.Lord, help me focus on my cash,
To do with it the things you ask;
That through its agency your power
In Jubilee release this hour.Thanks.
