“Do Old?”

(song)

“Do old? No!”, My angel, “I don't do old”, she said.
Of course not, who's asking that of you?
What you're just discerning is what's in store for you
If you get to slip death’s catching you.

You thought that somehow you're exempt from ages grip
If only you'd keep upon that path
Which you’ve been attending these days since recent youth
But “age” is not something which is asked –

For it is what's given by others in our world
Like childhood, or teen, young person, wife,
Or mother, and great-aunt, grandmother, next of kin –
It's status not matching truth of life.

A PK, an MK, a TCK – who cares?
An alkie, a druggie, straight or queer,
A woman, co-worker, there's labels by the box,
Their task is to drive you far from here.

So reach out, my friendly, don't drive us from your view
For you will, quite soon be here as well
Take life as you find it, not how they label you
Good practice for when you do this hell.

For it's not that pleasant to find oneself cut off
However they play that game with you
It's not all that new for we've been this way before
But “old” is a battle all will lose.
