From our time – you Junior leader
I a camper at Belair,
To an older student breaking
For some Tony's coffees there,
To our time as colleagues walking
Through our years of leadership,
You've been somewhat in the background
Of my life, yet part of it.For not all the folks around us
Are in forefront of our lives;
But the background gives the context
For our walk till death arrives.
Now our pathways bend much closer
As we both with cancer walk;
There's not much to say but ‘courage’
‘Let your joy flow through your talk’.For two years I've battled cancer
Though the toughest part was ‘me’–
Not the cancer, or the doctors,
Or the things they could not see;
Overwhelmed, I faced my trouble
(Each our journeys different are),
Then a woman told her story
(More advanced than me by far).As I listened to her journey,
Felt her joy from deep within,
Heard of flaunting down the hallways –
Those indignities there'd been –
Saw her turn her face towards me
Look directly in my eye,
Say, ‘don't let them get your humor
If you live, or if you die’.That is how I got through Christmas
In that first year of this trip;
Many miles I've walked this journey,
Grown a lot because of it;
But that gift of guidance lingers
In my memory today,
May there be that type of person
In your steps along this way.navigation
