On Reaching Up

Oh, the deep longing of my soul
As through each weary day I'd go;
My fingers reaching up to heaven
Bid peace come to this life now riven.

The breaks from past and present are
Like breaks of darkness star to star;
Where once was unity, now strife,
And separation – life from life.

Oh Lord, reach down and touch my soul;
Heal me within and make me whole;
Life's stripped from me – beyond my grasp –
“What else remains?” I raging ask.

My life destroyed through circumstance,
(Though body life has second chance)
Who will restore what once has been,
And set me free – new life begin?

Lord, to Your life I turn today,
Reach up, as this my prayer I say:
“Reach down and heal – set free to live
That I might have my chance to give.

I feel the touch of life on life
Amidst this whirlwind of strife;
These others also walk my road,
Their hands reach out to lift my load.

Lord open up my heart today,
When others bending to your sway
Reach out in love, affirm my worth –
Here, now, today, as from my birth.
