Guidance

Sometimes we have to show the way
Not words of guidance give,
Then leadership is thrust on us
Our life lets others live.

Though people-people some are not,
So leadership they shun,
When called to lead the way to light
They take the torch and run.

But some of us crave leadership
From deep within our souls,
When task's denied, it smoulders there
We're stopped from being whole.

Permission comes from those around,
Without it there's no way
To lead them safely out from death,
Thus guide to light of day.

Authority to lead comes down
From God – it's only source;
Permission comes to exercise
That gift, from folks, of course.

When that's denied we frit away
The hours of life somehow,
And search for ways to stimulate
Desire for change that's now.

So slow to change each culture is,
For that's its role in life –
To stabilize our private swirl
Lend protocol to strife.

From Plato's cave to Kingdom Come,
Amoeba-like it moves;
We run ahead, rejoin the group,
Take up its pace and moves

Then comes the day when quite afraid
To cross some stream or brook –
“Here, follow me”, we say to them,
“Step forth, no second look”.

“How can you walk ahead like that,
We're paralyzed with fear?”
“It's simple, while the days where mine
I walked ahead – been here.”

Then leaders and the led join hands
That obstacle cross o’er –
Permission and authority
Each satisfied once more.
