Rain

What is that paper blowing down the ditch?
Some old newspaper, wrap from food of which
A careless passerby dropped on his way?
But when I looked, strange message it did say:

“I love you, dear, and pray you get this note,
Stuffed, after writing, here inside your coat.
I dare not give it to you in your state,
Though danger lurks my future if I wait.

“I know that arguments and silence can
Sometimes keep love of woman from a man –
But all I have with which this note to write,
Newspapers scraps before you take to flight.

“I think of Amadeus far from home,
 Who missed her message – left for life alone;
I pray this message will be later read
As now you cannot hear what must be said:

“I know your world came down on you today
But I'm still here – despite what others say;
For when there's quiet – peace within your soul
This thought I send – and hope that you will know –

“I've always loved you – even through rough times;
Though you, it seems, can't hear these words of mine.
I longed for you, through darkness of the swirl –
I loved you more than all else in the world.

“If you'll come back, I'll throw away the past,
And grasp with you a future that will last.
My heart within is breaking with this pain,
As you, my love, walk out into the rain.

“If you, my friend, somehow don't get this note
I pray your thoughts come back to when I spoke;
Somewhere, sometime, in memory again –
To this sad night, when it began to rain.
