The Jester
So here we are – the Jester – me
That's what I saw myself to be
In terms as used in ‘D and D’ –
It fits so well – as now I see.The Jester has capacity
To use a tool most usefully,
Like, “Wand of Wonder ”, for you see,
Its powers are awesome, seemingly –Inside this wand, tools hundred more –
Capacities all set to roar;
In untrained hands great danger, see? –
Set free they act all randomly.Such power is not grasped foolishly
But in right hands, like Jester's, see,
Its power’s selected carefully,
Then put away appropriately.Such power He said, best is controlled,
For he who can, is blessed – behold
What joy and laughter, mirth and peace,
Are Jesters’ who can hold, release.That's ‘photo-power, eight hours a day’,
Or so it seems, as I survey
My chart of life up to this place,
“Interpret it as will” – His grace.And Jester I – great fun is life –
Though almost lost amidst that strife –
I say those tricky, awkward things,
Which save the lives of knaves and kings.I heard a joke ’bout such a man
He went too far, as Jesters can.
King said – “You die this time, Jestor,
For I can't take you anymore.”Now, thinking fast, the Jester asked,
“If I can do my trick at last,
Will you my life spare this one time –
If I make donkey talk sublime?”“Why yes, I'll spare your life”, King said,
“If donkey talks while I eat bread ”.
“I'll need some time”, the Jester said,
“One year – at home – with board and bread”.“That's granted to”, said King with grace,
“But you will die if it's disgrace
You lay upon me one year hence –
For failure, that's your recompense”.The jailer asked as they went out,
“What could your thought be, crazy lout?”
“A lot can happen in one year –
There's many days before I fear –Within one year the king might die;
Or, for that matter, so might I;
But on the other hand”, said he,
“A talking donkey might have we”.navigation
