Cultural Studies

One of the most significant events in the last half of the twentieth Century was the collapse of the last of the remaining Colonial Empires and the liberation of a host of a number of now-independent countries. Culture suddenly became a major player on the world stage, and with it arose a widespread interest in all things cultural. Global travel became possible with the improvements to transportation, particularly the advent of widespread and affordable air travel. Communication improvements arose with the development of television and then the internet. Suddenly the talk of a global village moved from rhetoric to reality.

As people became more conscious of their cultures of origin, and a burgeoning world population pushed us up against one another, cultural interest became a cultural necessity. Underrepresented and minority cultures started to insist on their place in the sun, a participants in a globalize-economy demanded a greater inter-cultural sensitivity in the international marketplace, and culturally-intrusive international aid packages were increasingly questioned. The demand for understanding took shape in an interest in "cultural studies" at the World's Universities, drawing together a wealth of resources, for Internet, print, film, radio and television.
